BROWSING THUMBNAIL PICTURES
To get to the thumbnail file browser view, double click on the IrvanView icon on the desktop, and then press T (for thumbnail).
Use the file browser in the left panel to browse to a directory of pictures:

A quick way to get back to a directory of pictures you have looked at before is to click in the directory panel below the menu, and select from recently viewed directories:

Copying, moving and deleting
To copy a picture from one directory to another, select the thumbnail of the picture, and drag it over to a different directory in the left hand pane:

You will notice that the curser turns into a plus sign, showing that it’s copying the file.
To move a picture, select the thumbnail of the picture, then while the left mouse button is down, hold down the shift key with your other hand on the keyboard. Keeping the shift key down, drag the picture over to a different directory in the left hand pane. You’ll notice that the curser turns into a minus sign, showing that it’s removing the file from that directory, and putting it into the one you selected. Lift the mouse button before the Shift key.
To delete a picture, select it, and press the delete key on the keyboard. You will be asked to confirm the deletion.
Selecting more than one picture for copying, moving and deleting
These techniques are the same as those used in Windows Explorer for selecting more than one file. Once you have selected multiple files, you can then copy, move or delete them all at once.
There are a number of options for selecting multiple pictures:
- Select one picture, then hold the control key down and select additional pictures.
- Select one picture, hold the shift key down, and select a second picture. All of the pictures between the first and second picture you selected will now be selected. This is very useful when you have a large number of files to select.
- Using the mouse, click and drag over a number of pictures. You need to start the click and drag away from the pictures, otherwise it’ll think you’re just trying to copy the one you selected. The pictures you have dragged over will be selected. Eg

VIEWING PICTURES
Open
There a number of ways to open one specific picture in IrfanView:
- Double click on a picture somewhere on your computer while in Windows explorer (this will only work if the file association settings were set during the installation of IrvanView as per the instructions). It won’t work on the class computers due to their particular setup.
- Double click on the IrfanView program icon (the squashed cat). Go to the File menu, and select Open. Browse to the directory where your picture is, and select it.
- In thumbnail file browser view, double click on a thumbnail.
Full screen mode
To remove all the screen clutter and just see the picture, click enter. To go back to the ‘normal’ view, click enter again.
View next picture
To view the next picture in the directory, press the space bar. Keep pressing it to move through all the pictures in the directory (this also works in full screen mode).
The View menu shows you the other shortcuts for moving through the directory, eg backspace to go back one,
ctrl-F for the first file in the directory, or even shift A to automatically move through the pictures in the directory (as a slide-show).
Crop
To crop a picture, click and drag on a picture around the area you want to crop, go to the Edit menu and select “crop selection”. Ctrl-Y is the shortcut.
You can adjust the selection before cropping by clicking and dragging on the outside of the selection box.
Rotating
To rotate an image, click L or R to rotate left or right 90 degrees.
